1970 Corvette Yenko Convertible ZR1 350-370 hp Special Purpose Engine Package VIN 194670S408318 Total 1970 Corvette Production: 17,316 Total 1970 Corvette Coupe Production: 10,668 Total 1970 Corvette Convertible Production: 6,648 Total 1970 ZR1 Production: 25 This is a car that was scheduled for production around April 2nd (DO2-Trim Tag, but was delayed due to the 1970 TEAMSTERS STRIKE. From early April 1970 to May 1st with parts shortages through at least May 5th, 1970.
NCRS Birthday Book: A) VIN 8314 was the last Corvette built pre-strike on April 4th, 1970. B) This car (VIN 8318) was built May 6th, 1970.
NCRS/GM Shipping Data Report: Shows a production date of May 6th, 1970 and delivery dealer of Yenko Chevrolet, who was well known for selling some of the hottest high-performance Chevrolet cars in the 1960's and 1970's, and who also used at least 3 dealer numbers to get hot cars when other dealers could not. The special ZR1 370 hp engine (which we believe is original) has a V0304CTV stamp, which indicates a March 4th machining and assembly date, which is more than logical for a car originally scheduled for an April 2nd production prior to the Teamsters Strike. Rare ZR1. Rare Color. Rare Yenko. Rare Convertible. Rare Strike Car.
Footnotes: Don Yenko was a man of few words but I bet he had quite a few for General Motors/Chevrolet with the 4 to 5 week delay on this unit and probably others. This car was the 4th car produced post-strike on May 6th at the St. Louis Assembly Plant, which only produced 111 Corvettes that day. One has to wonder if Don Yenko also received any of the other three (3) Corvettes VIN 8315, 8316, and 8317 produced early on May 6th, 1970. The 1969 production year was a long year with 38,762 Corvettes produced right up through December 31, 1969 (normally model years end in August or September). |
